SUMMARY:Images
DESCRIPTION:Images is a two-part evening that centers clear storytelling\, dramatic music\, and emotionally resonant movement. The first half of the program features a piano concerto performed by locally based virtuoso Amaury Morales\, setting the stage for the larger themes of night\, transformation\, and renewal that run throughout the evening. \nThe concerto—also titled Confrontation with the Void— (Josh Malave composer)  is part of a set of dramatic works depicting the night and the sun’s journey through it. This work is a heroic journey of the sun journeying into the darkness and not being overcome by it. While a piano concerto is traditionally written for full orchestra\, this work is performed with a chamber ensemble of two keyboards\, winds\, strings\, and conductor\, allowing for both intimacy and scale. The ensemble’s flexible instrumentation makes it possible to bring large dramatic works into diverse spaces without sacrificing depth\, power\, or virtuosity. \nThe second half of Images brings visual art to life through original compositions and dance. Each composer selected a historical artwork as inspiration\, translating still images into living\, emotional narratives onstage. \nMelisande\, by composer Ayça Akın\, and choreographer Elena Cvetkovich draws from the play Pelléas et Mélisande by Maurice Maeterlinck and painting Melisande by Marianne Stokes. In this interpretation\, the tragic character Mélisande is fragmented into three versions of herself—past\, present\, and future—locked in an internal struggle\, each vying to determine her fate. \nThe Mothers\, also composed by Ayça Akın and choreographed by Keeley Hernandez\, is inspired by Käthe Kollwitz’s early 1920s woodcut print series of the same name. The original carvings depict grief-stricken women huddled around a child\, shielding him with their bodies. Created in response to the aftermath of World War I\, Kollwitz’s work confronts the devastating impact of war on communities. This piece transforms those images into music and movement that speak to collective grief\, protection\, and resilience. \nNut Devours the Sun is a complete ballet told in fifteen minutes\, composed by Josh Malave and choreographed by Jayla Thacker and Grace Wellmon. This piece is inspired by the ceiling carvings of the Temple of Hathor in Egypt. Ancient Egyptians did not view the sky scientifically\, but as the living presence of Nut\, the goddess whose body is the cosmos. Each night she swallowed the aging sun\, and each morning she gave birth to a new one—an eternal cycle of aging\, death\, and rebirth. This ballet acts out that ancient depiction\, focusing not on explanation but on feeling: how the sun feels\, how the night feels\, and how a 4\,000-year-old idea can remain
