Joshua Malave is a composer from Montdale, a small town in the woods of northeastern Pennsylvania. His music focuses on grandeur, large scale forms, and drama as a primary guiding force. He has worked entensively with ballet, having been an accompanist for ballet since 2020, working at institutions such as Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Elise Flagg Academy of Dance, and Northern Illinois University. His works created for ballet include a short one act ballet called “The Crane” written for the Elise Flagg academy of dance, a short electronic piece for Vox Novus’s 60×60 that was selected to be performed in New york City as part of Fifteen minutes of Fame, and a full length ballet called “The Onion” based on the parable from Dostoevsky’s “The Brother’s Karamazov” composed for Confluence Ballet Company in Pittsburgh PA, which was premiered on May 3rd at Attack Theatre. Josh is also the music director, company pianist, and resident composer for Confluence Ballet Company.
As a pianist Josh frequently performs his own music either solo or with ensembles he starts the perform his music, most recently Josh performed a solo recital of his own piano music performed at Maison Le Beaux Arts in Mouzay, France.
Josh has also performed extensively as a cellist, performing chamber music, performing as a recitalist, concerto soloist, performing new works by living composers, collaborating with different musicians of different genres including on the Grammy winning album Shakti by Kristina Bennet, and frequently free improvising around the city of Pittsburgh.
